The story: JF was one of Germany’s finest intellectuals of the 20th century. He is probably best known for his biography on Adolf Hitler (1973), but not many people have recognized him as a travel writer. Anyway, this book is about a series of his trips to Italy.

And it is a heavy read. JF loves using nominal sentences, which makes his writing both slow and hard to identify with. Also, he apparently didn’t bother to leave his books or that huge intellect of his at home, and he is constantly quoting the classics and making socio-political references.

If you like deep stuff, then this is a good book for you. If you are looking for touching stories from the road, then stay the hell away from it.

I thought it was good in some parts, but it got a bit boring after a while, so I am giving it an okay rating.
