TLW Literature 29: Helge Schneider
Wednesday, April 13th, 2011Germans are not funny.
It’s sad but it’s true.
Americans can be funny, the Chinese, the Russians and the French can be very funny. But the Germans?
Err… how do I answer this question?
If you are not sure, then just go ahead and ask a person from Germany who is not completely mental, and he (or she) will most likely tell you that most of the so-called “comedy” that Germans seem to be enjoying these days is just appalling:
- That chubby guy from Berlin who does nothing else but crack corny jokes about his girlfriend?
- That dude with the toupet and the poser shades who recently displayed his lack of humor by suing journalists for mentioning his real name?
- That short guy with the speech defect who goes around insulting people?
- That big chick with the disturbingly huge eyes who seems to think that talking really loud and being really full of oneself is bound to be really funny?
- That Bavarian dude who apparently found out that the secret to a funny movie lies in a bunch of actors behaving like flamboyantly effeminate male homosexuals?
I mean, WTF??
Whatever happened to the country that used to have hilarious writers like Heinrich Heine? (But then he moved to France when he was 34.)
There is hope though.
Remember I told you about Hans-Peter Kerkeling? He is German, and he is funny. Also, deep in the abyss of our humorless German hearts, we cherish Heinz Erhardt’s lovely poetry, and we can appreciate the subtle sense of humor that Vicco von Bülow a.k.a. Loriot has been blessing us with.
So, not all is lost.
And here is another German who is funny:
| Author: | Helge Schneider |

| Type: | …the powers of imagination? |
| Rating: | 8/10 |
Weird, but hilarious
The story: HS, who is not only a writer but also an amazing jazz musician, makes up a weird journey around the globe. It’s completely fictitious: the polar bear that took a dump in his backpack, the encounter with the busty Russian jet pilot, the hovercraft ride from Gran Canaria to Morocco – none of it ever happened.
But this little book (120 pages) deserves to be read anyway, because it is just too hilarious.
Be warned though! I think some people are going to find HS’s writing rather weird than funny, and from their perspective, they might be right. Dada was weird. Даниил Хармс (Daniil Charms) was really fucking weird.
And this one is weird. But in a funny way.
The reason why this one is only an 8/10 is simply because I thought it was too short.
Anyway, a hilarious 8/10.
