505
I just learned that my landlord in Beijing, 王伟 (Wang Wei) has passed away:
This is a photograph I took in the spring of 2007, while I was in his office in apartment #505 to pay the rent. five-o-five – me and my other friends in the building used to call him just that.
I liked 505. He looked like a happy Boddhisatva when he was counting his cash, and I always thought he was treating me quite fair. To us young guys it was a big delight to see him parade around the block on one of his three chopper bikes.
Now he is gone, and word is that it happened in a motorcycle accident.
I hope he died smiling and happily rode on to the other side.
Rest in peace 王伟, 505.

Love the adventure. I’ve followed you pix in Google Maps but wish there were a date with each picture. Can they do that?
BTW, China looks awfully dusty. Is it that way everywhere you’ve gone so far?

I’m sure that he had nothing but a smile on his face and good thoughts running around his mind :) Rest in peace 505.
Cheers!

the amazing thing about your portraits is that you truly show someone. this is a wonderful snapshot – and when i read the background, it makes me smile. i am so sorry about this great loss.

John Sweeney: Hey, I’m happy you found the long line on Google Maps (or is it Google Earth?). Wouldn’t know about the date thing though. China is obviously pretty dusty in the areas that I walked through. Most of it is part of the Gobi desert after all!
Chloe: I think so too.
Lisa Blair: Happens to all of us.
Jessi Voigts: Thank you.
