fear of crowds
Monday, November 16th, 2009My video was being shown on a certain film tour around Europe, and last night, that tour came to Munich.
I got a free ticket. “Do you wanna appear on stage for an interview with the audience?” the dudes from the tour wanted to know.
“Okay,” I was surprised by my own answer. How could I have forgotten how much I was afraid of crowds?
Speak in front of two thousand people? WTF??
…I showed up at 6pm in a large event area in downtown Munich:
My friend Ralph was there. I asked him to get my small camera and take some pictures of what was going on. I somehow knew that I wasn’t going to be able to handle it.
“Dude, why do you have a bottle of liquor in your coat pocket??” Ralph wanted to know after he’d dug for my camera.
I didn’t know what to say.
Then one of the dudes from the tour notified me that there was no time for the stage interview anymore. I told Ralph that I probably wouldn’t need my alcohol anymore either.
Still, I was nervous. Rows and rows of seats were about to be filled up with outdoor enthusiasts…
…cool people who dressed in fancy outdoor clothes and seemed to be looking for new crazy stuff every day, like the human race was about to run out of time. Or maybe the universe was.
When the crowd had settled down and they were announcing my video, I went to the restroom.
I could hear the song playing…
“That is MY video they are showing up there” I said to the loo attendant, a black lady who looked very bored.
“Your video?” she said, “well then I’ll have to go up and take a look as well!”
And so we did.
