I(H)C10 β Modernization
Many people in the West have probably forgotten already, but China has suffered its very own history of colonization during the early 1900s.
For instance, Russia used to control large parts of China and Manchuria in the Northeast.
Today, the city of Dalian still has quite a bit of Russian building structure remaining from that period. The local authorities have been ignoring this part of their heritage for a very long time, until someone recently came up with a plan to exploit the tourist value of the so-called “Russian Quarter” downtown. Sadly, this plan only goes for the nicely refurnished buildings on main street, while the back alleys are about to be completely torn down.
Chinese families have been living in these massive old Russian buildings for generations:

I have never been in Dalian . But I will go there some day.
Something around us would remind us of history.
And you are right, modernization always comes with price.

The price is too high and it will be too late when the Chinese finally realize it.
