day 325: 吐哈油田 (tuha oil city) – [a plain spot] = 25,2km
2008-09-28.kml show on larger map
When I woke up, I knew I was going to have to dance.
But before, I first walked a bit through the residential areas of the oil city:
…often, when I’m looking at buildings like these from the outside, I can’t help but wonder what might be going on inside. Are the people in there happy? Are they sad? Maybe they are all at work and nobody’s home? Or maybe they are busy making food or something? …I wonder how many of them are making babies while I’m looking at their house from the outside.
…
Next thing I know I’m out on the highway again, and my next destination is 300km away:
No joke, dammit!
Then finally, the 4-0-0-0 dance – even though I had been waiting there for quite some time, nobody ever showed up for me to dance with, so I ultimately decided to dance with the cars on the highway:
Not very easy – I think it’s definitely better to dance with people than with cars (1-0-0-0, 2-0-0-0, 3-0-0-0).
…
The highway was long, straight, and boring:
Sometimes there would be little roads leading to what looked like some cozy villages:
…but I didn’t have time to go and check them out.
Instead, I was obliged to share my part of the highway with a massive amount of large noisy trucks:
Not very pleasant.
See the sudden sharp left turn on the map?
Well, that’s when I decided to leave G312 and rather continue walking on a parallel road in the south:
Very nice down there. Beautiful sceneries…
…and it was very quiet, too…
…I mean extremely quiet:
So much better than that stupid highway!
The only downside: there was no place for me to sleep.
So I started looking around, and I eventually managed to find a camping spot that I liked – soft yet firm underground, only 50 meters away from the street but yet not easily visible…
…and it was still early enough for me to see what I was doing.
When I had everything set up and was getting ready to have my dinner of crackers and canned corn, I looked up at the sky, and I swear there was more white than there was black up there.
So many stars!
…I just sat there, staring at the universe.
And I didn’t take a picture.

w00t! 4000! Wir sind stolz auf Dich! :)

Aloha, sehr eindrucksvoll! Was wohl der hupende LKW-Fahrer gedacht hat? Was hüpft da denn für ein bärtiges Armschleuderndes Wesen herum…? Hehe.

U're the MAN!

…das Video auf von Matt Harding auf youtube ist ja auch sensationell- wann gibts das in den Charts, haha? (dann hätten wenigstens alle diesen depremierenden Paul Potts vergessen) Danke "A導"!

Great, man! 4000 now! Do you think something or talk with yourself or just lost your mind when you walk on the deadly quiet road? very interesting to know!

4,000 kilometers, that's one heck of a dance, perhaps the best yet. But the funny thing is that all those people temporarily passing you have no clue what's going on, and they are probably thinking to themselves: "Yes, the desert drives some men to madness!"
By the way, keep your eyes open for Karez. (a network of undeground canals the uigurs built to move water accross the desert.) the touristy ones are kinda cheesy near turpan, but if you find a hole in the desert, you might want to check it out! There might be crisp cool water bellow!

All right now! Great little 4k dance! I can just imagine what those truck drivers must have been thinking when they came upon you: Look at that crazy foreigner! They were probably too afraid to stop, thinking you had lost all of your marbles – heat stroke or something. But it's a great thing, and no little accomplishment. Now we are all sending you vibes to carry you to 5,000!

Becci: Ich tu mein bestes, Schwesterlein! :)
basti: …and schacka to you too!
Réka: Ha, mein Kumpel Dario meinte ich sei ein "grobmotorischer Spast"!
Lilu: Jo, da tanzt der Sinologe, wie absurd!
Jan: Danke.
Gerald: Ende Oktober!
knarf: …aber völlig!
Gisela: Danke.
A導: Oh I love his video!! :)
Steven: …and greetings to you too!
Hermann: Danke.
Momo: Hat doch beides seine Vorteile.
Florian (Flo Li Anh, 開花): Kann dann ja auch nen Tanz machen da?
andy aka Anh Di 勇敢: Keine Ahnung wer Paul Potts ist.
Guojie: Depends. Thinking can be nice. Talking to oneself or singing can be quite pleasant too. Teacher Xie and me found out we both enjoy talking to the things we see on the roadside. Sometimes I just listen to music though, hahaha…
Austin: Dude, thanks for that karez hint!
John: Yep, it's exciting to think I have accomplished 4k. Feels good!
Patrick: I read it anyways – TWICE!
