There was once a foreigner who lived in Shandan:

Rewi Alley

He was here in the 1940s, his name was Rewi Alley 艾黎 and he was from New Zealand. He had a friend with him, a certain George Alwin Hogg 何克, and together they opened a school and invited foreign teachers to instruct Chinese students:

Alley stayed for more then ten years, then went on to live in Beijing, but his memory is still there.

He later became one of the very few foreigners ever to be granted the Chinese citizenship.

Parts of both Alley’s and Hogg’s ashes are buried here in Shandan:

Yes, China honors her good foreigners.

    häh, wie geht das denn?!? ich denke das essen in china ist so gesund?? na egal, hauptsache er war glücklich bis an sein lebensende, oder so ähnlich….
