Sunday, June 15th, 2008day 220: 山丹 (shandan) = 0km
There was once a foreigner who lived in 山丹 (shandan):
He was here in the 1940s, his name was Rewi Alley (艾黎) and he was from New Zealand. He had a friend with him, a certain George Alwin Hogg (何克), and together they opened a school and invited foreign teachers to instruct Chinese students:
Alley stayed for more then ten years, then went on to live in Beijing, but his memory is still there.
He later became one of the very few foreigners ever to be granted the Chinese citizenship.
Parts of both Alley’s and Hogg’s ashes are buried here in 山丹:
Yes, China honors her good foreigners.
