self-proclaimed doors

day 171: 甘草店 (gancaodian) - 三角城 (sanjiaocheng) = 21km

I woke up early, then finished yesterday’s post and went out to have a good serving of dumplings (饺子):

Today’s post is mainly about doors:

(You can guess that nothing really exciting happened to me today, otherwise I wouldn’t have to escape into the realms of obscure art right now!)

Well, I had been thinking about this for a while actually:

There are so many different kinds of doors - are they able to tell us something about the life behind them?

I wasn’t so sure, but at the same time I was feeling like an artist (quite a step from yesterday’s excursion into investigative journalism):

So there I was running around from building to building, all the while looking for gates and doors and curtains to shoot, when suddenly a little voice called me from behind:

“叔叔你给我们照一张相好吗?” - “Uncle, can you take our picture please?”

Of course.

So there they were - 12 years and 6 years old, on their day off from school - in front of the curtain door that suddenly seemed so meaningless behind them.

By the way, the weather was excellent today, with just the right amount of sunlight and blue skies and white puffy clouds:

Walking was somehow not as terrible as the days before.

Lesser amounts of pain.

…and there was the yellow flower:

Is this plant called rape? I’m really only guessing because it was so yellow:

There are so many things that I know nothing about at all.

…suddenly I realize that I have already proven this point in yesterday’s post, when I chose to call the green lake in the 12th picture “sapphire water”, when it should have been “emerald water” of course. Silly me!

There were more doors in the meantime, all of them amazing and interesting:

I think there is a problem with this set of photos though:

…there are no people!

I would deliberately try to find an angle that excluded all life from the picture:

…while at the same time I’d be hoping that the doors, or the buildings around the doors, or the stuff in front of the doors, would be able to tell us something meaningful - something meaningful about the life that I had just shut out from the picture.

I’m getting to thinking… isn’t this self-proclaimed art a weird thing?

Two more days to 兰州 (Lanzhou).
